The Filmmaker Support:
Error - When I play The Filmmaker, I keep getting pop-up error messages involving
the file “mscomctl.ocx”. When I click OK, the game works perfectly, but the error
keeps popping up. Please help!
Solution - This error is the result of a missing file
on your version of Windows. The file "mscomctl.ocx" is a vital Windows component
and not solely a part of this game. It is common for this file to mistakenly get
deleted when uninstalling games or applications. Luckily, this can easily be fixed.
To correct the error, first search your drive for mscomctl.ocx to see if you have
it. If not you can download it from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/mscomctl.zip.
The file should be placed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder (or SYSTEM64 if you have
a 64-bit operating system). Once it is there click START-->RUN and type "regsvr32
mscomctl.ocx" (without quotes quotes) in the box and click OK. (If you have a 64-bit
operating system, then type regsvr64 instead.) This should fix the problem.
Error - When I put The Filmmaker Install DVD in my drive, my anti-virus software
alerts me that the setup.exe file contains malware!
Explanation - A few customers
have reported this. This is a false positive. You can safely ignore this message
and run the application. If you would prefer not to, you can bypass setup.exe and
install the game manually. If you use Windows XP or Vista, then run “TheFilmmaker.exe”.
If you use Windows 7, then run “TheFilmmakerWin7.exe”. Known anti-virus programs
currently detecting setup.exe as malware are: Avira. If you use a different anti-virus
software that has detected setup.exe as malware, please let me know. I will update
this list as needed.
Error - The Filmmaker demo won’t install or play on my system.
Solution - The demo
is not compatible with Windows 7. The full game, however, is!
Error - Video sequences don't play, I can hear the audio of the sequence but see
no visuals, or I receive the following error when a movie sequence is about to play:
Error while attempting to play the following video file: <filename.avi>. Automation
Error. Unspecified Error.
Solution - The Filmmaker requires the Mideo video codec
to play. When installing The Filmmaker, you are asked if you want to install the
codec. Uninstall The Filmmaker and reinstall it, choosing YES when asked to install
the Mideo codec. Your problem should be solved!
Error - Some puzzles do not work.
Solution - Many puzzles in the game use Adobe Flash.
If you are having trouble getting puzzles to work, then you simply need to install
the Adobe Flash player, which is completely free and available via download here.
Error - I receive the following error message: Error executing script. Make sure
that the global variables do not have names that are reserved by the engine. The
Scripting Engine returned the following error message: Invalid character.
Solution
- Your PC’s native language is not English. This can cause a conflict with The Filmmaker's
scripting engine. To fix the problem, switch the native language to English.
Error - After exiting the game on Windows Vista or Windows 7, I receive a pop-up
error message involving the file flash.ocx and stating that the game may not have
run properly.
Explanation - This message is a result of a different version of Flash
being called from the game engine versus the one actively used in the Windows operating
system. You can safely ignore this message if it pops up; it will not harm the game
or your computer in any way. If your OS gives you the option to ignore this error
in the future by confirming that the application did run properly, feel free to do
so.
Error - Audio sometimes overlaps, stops abruptly, or cuts off before finishing when
playing The Filmmaker on Windows 7.
Explanation - The Filmmaker, though fully playable
on Windows 7, has some limitations due to incompatibilities with the operating system
that will affect the audio engine. If you are using Windows 7, then it is highly
recommended that you play the game with captions on.
Error - The companion guide states that I should be able to rotate the individual
pieces of the slider puzzle in the theater office, but I can’t figure out how!
Explanation
- The companion guide was written prior to the completion of The Filmmaker’s beta
testing period. In the beta version of the game, players had to rotate the individual
pieces of the slider puzzle in addition to positioning them correctly. However,
due to several bugs, this was removed from the final game. By that time, the companion
guides had already been printed. Rest assured, rotating the pieces is not required
to solve this puzzle, should you decide to attempt it.
Error - The game pauses for several seconds when loading video sequences, interrupting
gameplay. Is there any way to fix this?
Solution - Some video files are read off
of the DVD. On slower systems, it may take a few seconds for these videos to load.
If you would like, you can copy the entire contents of the game to your hard drive
to speed up gameplay. Please note, however, that doing so will take up an additional
2 GB of hard drive space. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2.
Copy all files on the Game DVD to the Program Files\The Filmmaker\ folder (or whichever
alternate folder to which you installed the game), placing each file in the same
folder name on your hard drive as it is in on the DVD drive. For instance, all files
in the Frames folder on the DVD drive should go in the Program Files\The Filmmaker\Frames
folder on your hard drive.
3. In the Program Files\The Filmmaker\ folder, rename
RunFromCD.dat to RunFromCD.old (or rename it to any other name).
4. Run the game.
The DVD will not need to be in the drive, and the slowness should disappear!
