Story Design/Script Writing

I started writing an an early age.  In school, my teachers encouraged and honed my abilities, believing that I had the talent to become a successful writer.  Though I was humbled by their support, I knew that professional writing wasn’t what I wanted to do when I grew up.  I always wanted to be a game designer.

But that doesn’t mean I stopped writing.  Quite the contrary, in fact.  You see, stories are what got me interested in gaming.  As a child, while my peers were obsessed with console games consisting of shooting “bad guys” and earning high scores, I would play story-focused computer games, such as the classic Sierra series King’s Quest.  I had no interest in the former type of game; I found them boring.  For me to take the time to play a game, I wanted to earn something out of it–an emotional experience that I would carry with me from that point forward.

To me, games are the most complex form of storytelling, because, instead of simply observing a series of events, the gamer takes on the role of a central character in the story being told.  Now, as a developer, I believe in taking a story-centric approach toward game development.  Without a strong story hook, it is my sincere belief that gamers will quickly find themselves bored.  As such, when planning a new game, I always begin with its story.  I approach game design as a screenwriter would approach a screenplay.  As such, my games tend to have a strong cinematic feel.

I am a trained writer and have received awards and numerous accolades for my works.  A few of my short stories have been locally published, and my games Lifestream and Shady Brook were praised for their original, engaging storylines.
